Gower
Peninsula
Walks
The Gower Peninsula (or Penrhyn Gŵyr
in Welsh) was the first area in the UK to be named an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
(AONB) in 1956. It covers about 70 sq. miles.
It has a number of famous
landmarks, not least Worms Head, the promontory at Rhossili, which is cut
off at high tide, Three Cliffs Bay and the Mumbles.
30,000 year old buried human remains were found on Gower,
known as the 'Red Lady' of Paviland. They are the oldest ever found in
Britain.A more thorough examination revealed them to be of a man!
The highest point of Gower is The Beacon at Rhossili Down at
633 ft, overlooking Rhossili Bay.
There are many lovely sandy
beaches and Swansea is nearby giving the opportunity for a city visit. Don't
miss its own botanical gardens which are a joy.
The interior of the Gower is mainly
agricultural and there are many small villages, some with great pubs!
